SENIOR ARCHITECT - EXPERIENCES (Web, TV, Enablement)

Contract type: Permanent
Location: London / Salford / Newcastle / Glasgow - Hybrid Role (1-2 days in the office) 
Salary: £75,000 - £85,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

We’re looking for a Senior Architect to join our Experiences Architecture team to help shape the strategy for how millions of people watch and listen to BBC content. You’ll shape the evolution of flagship products like BBC iPlayer and BBC Sounds, guiding teams to deliver seamless, high-quality experiences to households across the UK.

WHY JOIN THE TEAM
 

This is a critical role that will see you embedded in cross-functional teams operating within the Product Operating Model, working with engineers, product managers and designers. You will also collaborate closely with architects across the BBC to ensure coherence and alignment with wider enterprise architecture.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT
 

  • Collaborate with engineering teams, product managers, and external partners to drive the delivery of resilient and scalable services aligned with our technical strategy.
  • Shape the early stages of projects by defining their technical scope and architectural approach.
  • Contribute to long-term strategy by identifying cross-platform requirements and shaping roadmaps to deliver sustainable, secure, and high-performing solutions.
  • Provide consultancy to teams and leadership on architectural and infrastructure considerations, with a focus on feasibility and business value.
  • Coach and mentor engineers to strengthen technical practices and improve delivery quality across the department.
  • Clearly communicate the technical architecture of our systems to helps teams align and evolve together.
  • Stay current with industry trends and new technologies—bringing insight into how we might apply them for strategic advantage.
     

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
 

Essential:

 

  • Proven experience designing and deploying scalable, reliable systems for high-traffic, public-facing digital services.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams within fast-paced, agile delivery environments.
  • Exceptional communication and influencing skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts and unite diverse stakeholders around a shared vision.
  • Experience using AWS in complex, large-scale production environments.
  • Ability to build alignment across teams and organisational boundaries to achieve strategic outcomes.
     

Desirable:

 

  • Practical experience designing large-scale business layers and implementing Backend-for-Frontend (BFF) patterns.
  • Experience in agile software delivery at scale, with a perspective on what good looks like in modern product engineering.
  • Knowledge of cloud-native and microservice architectures, ideally applied in the development of smart speaker or smart TV applications.
  • Experience evaluating and advocating for emerging technologies to unlock new user value and innovation opportunities.
